Summer Job in Nature Conservation and Outdoor Life

Are you interested in working with nature and outdoor life issues in a hands-on and practical way? The County Administrative Board is looking for three to four summer employees to carry out nature conservation measures and maintenance of outdoor facilities in our exciting and valuable natural areas.

Job Responsibilities

The County Administrative Board manages most nature reserves in the county. We also work with nature conservation measures outside protected areas, primarily within the framework of action programs for endangered species (ÅGP). Making protected nature accessible is also part of our mission, and we do this by providing infrastructure in the form of roads, trails, parking lots, and other important facilities for visitors.

During the first half of the summer, you will primarily work on maintaining trails and paths, mainly through clearing. After that, there will be greater variation in tasks, including mowing, emptying insect traps, and inspecting and maintaining reserve boundaries, fences, and outdoor facilities. Simpler construction and maintenance measures for outdoor facilities, such as bridges and sign stands, as well as nature conservation clearing, will also be relevant. A smaller portion of administrative work is also included, mainly related to planning, reporting, and documenting measures.

About the Workplace

You will work in the Nature Conservation and Management Unit at the Department of Nature and Environment. The unit's approximately 15 employees are responsible for the establishment and management of nature reserves, action programs for endangered terrestrial species (ÅGP), terrestrial environmental monitoring, outdoor life, green infrastructure, and more.

At the unit, a team of experienced, cheerful, and committed individuals works together with others to preserve the most important and valuable natural environments in the county. Overall, there is fantastic experience and competence here, and as a summer employee with us, you have good opportunities to develop your knowledge of nature conservation management and gain insight into the County Administrative Board's work regarding nature conservation, biodiversity, and outdoor life.

As an employer, the County Administrative Board is a responsible authority that works hard to enable a good balance between work and private life, which is reflected in flexibility regarding working hours. You will find the County Administrative Board centrally located in Västerås, near the train station.

When Does the Work Take Place?

Flexible arrangement but preferably from week 23 to week 33 with one or a couple of weeks off if you wish. If you can work several weeks, either before or after the specified period, please indicate this in your application.

Qualifications

We are looking for individuals with a strong interest and good knowledge of nature, and who are accustomed to being outdoors regardless of the weather. We are looking for someone who:

  • can handle and enjoys physical work
  • has completed brush cutter training and holds a brush cutter certificate (at least level RA)
  • is computer literate
  • can speak and write fluently in Swedish
  • has some knowledge of nature conservation or ecology and can identify our most common species, such as trees and shrubs
  • has a B driver's license

It is advantageous to have:

  • ongoing or completed education focused on nature conservation and/or forestry at the university or college level
  • chainsaw certification
  • experience or knowledge of working with GIS
  • experience in nature inventory or carrying out nature conservation management measures

Personal Qualities

The work involves contact with employees at the County Administrative Board as well as external individuals such as landowners, livestock keepers, contractors, and the public. It is important that you feel comfortable in situations where you need to communicate with people you do not know.

We prefer that you are curious, attentive, and able to easily understand and follow instructions. It is important that you can work relatively independently and take responsibility. We place great emphasis on personal suitability and see it as natural that you contribute to a good working atmosphere.
